A BRIEF LOOK INTO THE CONCEPT OF SELF DEFENSE

What is “Self Defense?”

Denver self defense

Self Defense takes on several meanings in the context of the individual, and these are interrelated to insuring your personal safety and the safety of those you may have to defend and Denver self defense pertains to folks in the the Denver metroplex. The act of defending yourself or another’s person when physically attacked is usually the first thing that comes to mind. But self defense also includes protecting your own interests, property, ideas, and so forth by argument or strategy. Finally, self defense from physical attack can often morph into self defense as a claim or plea to justify your actions in the face of the law. Our primary concern in this article is for the individual who prepares in advance for the prospect that they may need to defend themselves in a physical confrontation.

How does one go about preparing for the possibility of a physical confrontation? One method is by learning a martial art. Martial arts come with many different approaches to the physical techniques they impart, and it is important to pick one where self defense is a major focus of their teaching.  How does one find out if this claim is really true? Here are some things to look for and consider.

First among many things they should be teaching is awareness of your surroundings. This includes how to spot and identify threats, common sense approaches to avoiding danger in the first place, and strategies to de-escalate confrontations.

Second is a range of self defense skills in the form of physical responses. Many times simple escapes, holds, and locks are more appropriate responses than strikes, throws, chokes, or breaks. You need a range of responses for a martial art to be useful in defending yourself without the use of excessive force in accomplishing your task. Ideally, after sufficient practice, these martial skills should impart confidence and awareness in the individual that allows them to avoid danger or to de-escalate that danger from a more confident position, most of the time simply by the way they carry themselves. Danzan Ryu Jujitsu is a system that provides its practitioners with a range of responses suited to self defense.

Perhaps the most important aspect of using martial arts training to prepare for self defense is what could happen after being forced to defend yourself and that is the possibility of being forced to defend yourself again in the eyes of the law.  It is essential that you learn the laws pertaining to self defense in the state in which you reside and in general where you may be travelling. In the course of your martial arts training always keep in mind the legal framework in which you must operate when devising your self defense strategy. If you are ever forced into a self defense situation and you find yourself in the presence of law enforcement after the fact, do not make a verbal, written, or taped statement without your lawyer. If arrested, do not resist. Remember; do not talk to anyone other than your lawyer regarding your actions. Stay safe.
